A Space of Our Own - Gallery Reception

bannerdraft3.jpg

In an effort to become an increasingly inclusive creative space and resource for artists, we experimented with Open Studio Sessions wherein artists could use our space to work amongst other artists. These pieces are to be displayed in our Newport News Community Gallery for a new exhibit concept titled “A Space of Our Own”. This exhibit is thematically-inspired by our Free Hang Day and the previously popular, “A Space of Her Own”. The featured artists work in a variety of media including acrylic, oil, watercolor, photography, and multi-media installation work. Their styles vary from abstract, to portraiture, to landscape, and collages.

There will also be a fun competition in which patrons will be able to vote for an audience favorite at the reception and the winner will be guaranteed a solo exhibit in the Newport News Community Gallery for our 2019/2020 exhibit season!

The exhibit will run from March 18- April 15, 2019 with the reception on March 23, 2019 from 5:30-7:30pm. Free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. RSVP is appreciated but not required, and will be available soon.

Join us in our Newport News Community Gallery on January 11, 2019 for the celebration of this exhibit, featuring the powerful fine art photography of Mr. Smarttguy. Meet the artist and learn more about his creative process and his artwork. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served and a raffle will be held. We Are The Music Makers! - Gallery Reception

Banner1.jpg

Join us for the reception for this exhibit during the annual Elder Anderson Johnson Visionary Arts Festival.

"We Are the Music Makers!" educates and engages viewers in the cultural history of traditional Southern music. The exhibit includes 30 panels - featuring 28 photos and stories from Music Maker musicians. A supplemental website provides audio and video components for each panel. The exhibit highlights how poverty, geography, and age have limited the exposure of these artists, questioning the widespread idea that these musical traditions they perform have "died out."

We Are the Music Makers: Preserving the Soul of America's Music is a multi-media exhibit of photographs, audio recordings and video from Tim Duffy, founder of Music Maker Relief Foundation.

The reception is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. During the reception, there will be private tours of this exhibit, along with the permanent Anderson Johnson exhibit, Working in the Spirit. To receive private tour, please RSVP below.

Closing Reception - Out of the Classroom: The Soul of the Artist

Join us for the closing reception of this incredible exhibit. This event is free and open to the public. Every August, Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center hosts the “Out of the Classroom” exhibit which is exclusively comprised of works by an artist (or group of artists) who teaches. For the 2018 exhibit, we featured a joint displaying of married couple, James and Alexandra Whiteside.
Alex Whiteside paints mostly abstracts while Jimi Whitside creates images that help him to articulate his unique point of view as an autistic artist. In the words of Alex Whiteside, “Jimi paints realistic and surrealistic themes and I paint mainly nonrepresentational abstracts, but the common thread between the two of us is the interpretation of emotion, nostalgia and memories, and the creativity that comes from the soul.”

Alexandra and Jimi Whiteside have graciously decided to hold a raffle! The prize is a 5" x 7" piece made specifically for the closing reception. If you would like to enter, please submit a donation of any amount on the Eventbrite page or at the reception. All proceeds will go to continuing the arts programming at Downing-Gross.

Blacker the Berry: Gallery Reception

finalflyer.jpg

"Blacker the Berry” primarily explores the strength and beauty of the black woman through the physical form using mostly black and white portraiture accented by surprising hints of color and radiant gold-leaf appliqué. Artist Ray Johnson calls upon the most important women in his life including his mother, wife, and daughter as inspiration for these incredible works. In this exhibit, Johnson has pushed himself even further to include men and images of anyone who strikes a feeling within him.

As Johnson states “I want people to see themselves in the art. I want them to feel… the story within it.”

Join us in our Newport News Community Gallery on June 6th for the celebration of this exhibit, featuring the beautiful and powerful work of Ramon Johnson. Meet Ray and learn more about his creative process and his artwork. This event is free and open to the public.

“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”
— Elliott Erwitt

Join us on April 6th at 6:00 PM for the gallery reception, where you can meet the young photographers, learn more about their work and enjoy the wonder of our city. The Saga of Faith Mission - Panel Discussion

fULLfLYER.jpg

The Saga of Faith Mission is a panel discussion exploring the preservation of important local black history and the role of religion in folk art through the story of Anderson Johnson.

The panel will include the original members of the Committee to save the Faith Mission, as well as those who knew Elder Anderson Johnson himself and collected his artwork. Also included will be the co-curator of our permanent exhibit "Working in the Spirit: The Visionary Art & Life of Elder Anderson Johnson 1915-1998", who will shed light on how to curate a space meant to re-create the sensory experience of entering Johnson's Faith Mission.

The discussion will be preceded by the introduction of prolific Folk artist Everna Lee Taylor who will display in our Foyer Gallery from February 1-March 31, 2018.

The afternoon will be concluded with a Q&A and reception. RSVP is recommended.

A Space Of Her Own - Artist Reception

asoho1.jpg

A Space of Her Own is an effort to bring to the forefront the need for women’s representation in art and society. The relevance of women’s contributions to history should be undisputed, but their narratives as told by women themselves are largely absent from our societal fabric. The purpose of this initiative is to create more collaborative artistic spaces that are accessible to everyone, especially women, while in turn acting as homage to women artists from previous generations.
Each artist listed on this site has chosen a trailblazing female artist of a previous generation to act as their muse for a new piece that they have created. They will present their muse in a multi-sensory artist reception in the Newport News Community Gallery on January 6th, 2018.
The exhibit will be displayed from January 6-27, 2018.

For more information on the exhibit, the artists, and the free workshops, visit http://aspaceofherown.weebly.com/
