About The Artist
My recent journey through the American West transformed not only my understanding of the landscape, but also my understanding of America itself. Traveling through Sedona, Flagstaff, and the 4 corner states, I encountered an environment unlike anything I had previously experienced—vast, ancient, and deeply alive. The towering red rock formations, shifting desert light, and quiet expanses revealed a side of the country that felt both timeless and intimate. In these spaces, I discovered a renewed love for this part of the nation and a deeper appreciation for the relationship between the land and the sky.
My work explores the balance between the living and the inorganic: the tension and harmony between stone and sky, growth and erosion, permanence and change. I am fascinated by the dance of the seasons and the subtle transitions between times of day—the way morning light softens rock faces or how dusk transforms the landscape into silhouettes and shadow. These fleeting moments remind me that nature is constantly in motion, even within places that appear eternal.
The geography of the Southwest especially resonated with my artistic vision. The narrow passages between cliffs, openings within rock formations, and layered vistas became symbolic to me. They mirror my belief that our understanding of the world is limited, that we experience life through only small windows of perception. I am drawn to portals, slit views, and fractured perspectives because they suggest both mystery and possibility—glimpses into something larger than ourselves.
Through my work, I seek to capture not only the physical beauty of the Western landscape, but also the emotional and philosophical experience of moving through it. Sedona and Flagstaff challenged my perspective, expanded my sense of place, and inspired me to see America not as a singular idea, but as a collection of vast and interconnected worlds waiting to be explored.
About the Exhibit
“Between a Rock & Eternity” captures photographer Brandy Bergenstock’s 6 months journey out west. The images focus on contrast: rough ground against open air, weathered surfaces beside living forms, growth next to erosion. Bergenstock is drawn to moments where things feel both alive and fading, as if the land is holding its breath.
Using natural light and minimal intervention, Bergenstock works spontaneously, letting texture, shadow, and atmosphere guide the frame.
These photographs are not about spectacle, but presence—paying attention to what is often overlooked and finding meaning in the tension between what endures and what disappears.
