Open Mic Night

Join host Quinton 'Q5' Jennings-Sherman in the Newport News Community Gallery at Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center for an evening of creativity, community, and conversation. This is a free family-friendly open mic event.
GreenBeats LIVE!
Join us for GreenBeats, Live!, a partnership with WHRO Public Media and Virginia Stage Company, featuring music written by Skye Zentz and Meredith Noel that was originally produced for WHRO Public Media’s GreenBeats.
In GreenBeats, Live! our hero Malia learns to make small changes to protect her neighborhood and the environment with help from Skip the Stray, Scoop Dog Sam and her other friends. Join her in earning your own Green Brigade Badge and get the green beat on your street!

A Beautifully Black Conversation
This program, led by Dr. Margaret Bristow (Professor of African American Studies) will be an open conversation about the Black cultural experience. Topics will be submitted by attendees as they arrive, and their input will help guide the conversation. This event is free and open to everyone. Light refreshments will be served.

Hampton Roads (HR) Jazz Inc. in collaboration with the City of Newport News presents the Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Celebration.
This month-long event will feature some of the finest names in jazz, all showcasing the soulful and dynamic spirit of the genre. Mark your calendars for these incredible performances at Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center:
April 30 – 8:00 p.m.
Kick off the festival with the Jason Marsalis Quartet, featuring special guest pianist Allyn Johnson, saxophonist Rashaan Barber, bassist Will Ledbetter, and drummer Jae Sinnett. Experience an evening of exceptional jazz by one of the Marsalis family’s talented musicians.
May 9 – 8:00 p.m.
Experience the incredible multi-Grammy-nominated vocalist Roberta Gambarini. Roberta’s remarkable voice will be showcased in an evening of elegant jazz, with an opening performance by Brittany Burrell, winner of the "Ladies of Song Contest."
