About the Exhibit

This exhibit celebrates the youth of downtown Newport News. The idea is to support, motivate, and stimulate the minds of our children by displaying stunning, dramatic images depicting them in what can be their future careers. These images are based on personal interviews with children. In addition to portraiture , the exhibit will also feature multimedia pieces, sculptural elements, and short autobiographies of our community's youth discussing their future plans. This is the first time this exhibit has been curated but we hope that it will continue to be shown in more cities in the future!

Don’t Count Me Out has been rescheduled to July 7th - 31st, 2020. The reception will be held on July 10, 2020 at 6:00 pm.

While the reception is open to the public, there will be no more than 50 patrons in the gallery at a time. Those who cannot make the reception are welcome to visit the exhibition during business hours until its end on July 31. The exhibit will also be displayed virtually on our website.

About the Artist

Michelle Richardson

Michelle Richardson, a self-taught artist, believes that atmospheric change comes by a change in one’s perspective. She works on the premise that change is created. In her creative process, she shares her perspective by carefully choosing the focal point, colors, style and whether there will be a message conveyed through figurative subject matters. She enjoys creating art that gives rise to emotions, increases self-awareness and encourages critical thinking.

Her art work includes pencil drawings, watercolor, abstract and acrylic paintings, mixed-media art, crafting, up cycling, portrait paintings/drawings, card making, clay modeling as well as paper- maché.Her practice would be best described as multifaceted as she creates art in various styles, uses a variety of mediums, and many different subject matters.
