About the Exhibit
In our first exhibit of the Bridges season, the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center brings the second iteration of “A Space Of Our Own” to the Newport News Community Gallery during the month of September. “A Space of Our Own”, is an exhibition that reinforces our focus on building bridges throughout the community and beyond. Last year, the concept was conceived out of the notion that we needed to become an increasingly inclusive creative space and resource for artists. Thus, we experimented with Open Studio Sessions wherein artists could use our space to work amongst other artists. These pieces were displayed in our Newport News Community Gallery for a new exhibit concept titled “A Space of Our Own”.
At the exhibit reception, patrons were able to vote for an audience favorite and the winner was guaranteed a solo exhibit in the Newport News Community Gallery for our 2019/2020 exhibit season! The winner, visual artist Anthony Wardrett, announced that he wanted his exhibit to include all the then participating artists and select artists participating in Open Studio for the 2019/2020 season. Thus, Anthony Wardrett will be growing his artistic portfolio by becoming a DG guest curator for this year’s “A Space of Our Own”.
