About The Artist

Gloria Coker

She was born in Bridgeport Ct on Dec 19 1941 and graduated from the University of Bridgeport in 1963. She met her husband like Coker while she worked at the Electric Boat Company. He was in the submarine service medical school before serving on two nuclear-powered fleet ballistic missile submarines. After finishing his residency at Duke, they moved to Newport News, and he opened his solo dermatology practice in Hampton. Gloria finally got her Med degree in counseling and guidance from William and Mary in 1974. Gloria accepted a position as a newsroom illustrator at the Daily Press. There, her drawing and painting expanded to include courtroom art, drawing from witness descriptions for Hampton and Newport News Police Departments, and on-the-spot art for movies. She has participated in events such as the Parade of Sail. She has also painted for the Virginia Symphony. Some of Gloria’s work was used for several years by the organization.
