Scot Turner is an American born artist that is redefining the boundaries of expressionistic art by using digital tools to assist his creative process. Building upon over 25 years of advertising and marketing experience he’s challenging today’s presumptions of art and formulating new ideas that maximize its emotional impact. Today, there’s a profound history of past expressionistic passion and innovation just one digital click away, and he’s tapping into that legacy. It is the next step in his work that’s called “Xpressionizm.” Turner is located in Newport News, VA, and has received a BA degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, has been awarded a Fellowship Grant from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and was a featured artist for the 2017 ArtPop national outdoor art project. Artist Statement
I believe the purpose of art is to inspire the imagination and connect us with our humanity.
As a child I wanted to change the world. I wanted to make a difference. I wanted to make a big splash. From the past to the present and in between I have learned of life’s limitations. And, that you must confront every limitation with innovation.
My conceptual process comes from life experience. Art is the container for a compelling story, and it keeps the promise alive not by what I see but by what I know is there.
I love a challenge. Sometimes I try to Imagine the impossible and then create it. I use vivid colors symbolically rather than realistically. Lines and forms are simplified and distorted. Images are alive and intuitive. Only the colors of my pallet can render the emotions of that visual reality.
In the end my reward comes when the viewer gets something more than they expect. For me, no matter how perfect a painting is, it will not win a place in our heart unless it can appeal to our deeper emotions.
About:
Welcome to the “Xpressionizm Experience.”
Xpressionizm describes a new milestone in the evolution of expressionistic art. It builds upon the rich legacy of past art styles such as impressionism, expressionism, surrealism, neo-expressionism, and abstraction. It represents a new frontier of artistic expression aided by today’s digital technology. In this exhibition, Turner takes you through a brief history of 20 and 21st century art and how the advancement of past artistic styles have led him to his Xpressionizm style of art.
Xpressionizm will be on display July 9-August 3, 2026 with a reception on July 21, 2026 from 7:30-8:30pm.
