About the Artist
Art, specifically sketching and drawing, has been a passion of Ray’s since childhood. Like many young men, he loved comics and cartoons. This love sparked an interest in visual art and the art of telling a story. Realizing he enjoyed the creative process, he decided to explore Art History and Theory while attending Thomas Nelson Community College.
When he became a father in 2003, his love of art experienced a reawakening. There was a newfound joy that enhanced and Brough deeper meaning to his artistic vision.
Acrylic is the medium of choice for his creative expression. For him, there is a simplistic enjoyment in using markers. It takes him back to that little boy that was first drawn to the canvas. He also consistently incorporates the use of permanent markers in his pieces.
Much of his work draws inspiration from his observations growing up in Newport News. His work is influenced by Black culture and the experience he had as a Black youth, son, husband, and father. He is a proud Black man shaped by the positive and negative images witnessed in his community: a strong community centered around the legacy of family and friends.
His body of work includes urban landscapes full of vibrancy and color, Hip Hop legends, and Black Cultural Icons that influence him to this day. His work embodies the pleasures and pains of current events and cinematic scenes that produce a visit story for his patrons.
