"Oh Where, Oh Where is my Christmas Tree?" starring K'Bana Blaq

ChristmasTree.jpg

The highly requested stage play "Oh Where Oh Where Is My Christmas Tree", written and produced by K'bana Blaq, is back! Join us on December 1st, as K’Bana and friends tell a story of love, loss, and the Christmas Spirit!

K'bana Blaq, a vocalist with the popular Hampton funk group The Fuzz Band, said his original idea for the play was a cross between "Annie" and Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol." Blaq's lead character, businessman Devon Leehart, serves as the Scrooge figure — a decided departure from Blaq's own exuberantly positive personality.

The play features many talented performers including Z'yana Guyton, Dreams In Motion Dancers, Myra Smith, and many more! The score was produced by the very talented DJ A1 & Christopher Wilkes!

Pre-Sale tickets will be available from October 15th until November 15th. After this, the ticket prices will increase. Be sure to grab your tickets early!

"Breach of Peace" - A Mike Wiley Production

BreachOfPeaceBanner.jpg

Returning to Downing-Gross is one of the first performers to ever bring a production to the Ella Fitzgerald Theater Stage. We are honored to have the incredible performer, playwright, actor, director, and creator - Mike Wiley. His one-man shows have been enthralling audiences all across the country and we are excited to have him return!

ABOUT THE SHOW:

May 24, 1961 was the day 19-year-old Jean Thompson’s father had prepared her for her entire life. “My parents always talked about the injustice of segregation, but they were optimistic; they didn’t feel like it was going to last forever,” Thompson recalled. “They raised us to be ready. I remember my dad saying the day will come, and when it does, you should be ready.”

On that day, she boarded a Trailways bus in Montgomery, Alabama with 11 other young Freedom Riders bound for New Orleans – and history. Within three months, approximately 300 other riders took up the mantle to desegregate buses, following the path of the first brave few. Mobs bloodily assaulted many. Others were arrested shining a light on a brutal, segregated South. Breach of Peace is based on true accounts of surviving participants of the Freedom Rides as well as many other individuals involved in the early struggle for African-American equality.

This solo-play is a living monument to those remarkable young men and women of various races, religions and backgrounds who rose to face the dangers of fighting for just and equal treatment for all.

CANCELLED - An Evening with Mendel: "Stories for Grown Folk"

AN EVENING W MENDEL, STORIES FOR GROWN FOLK & ART EXHIBIT DATES.jpg

A tour de force. Experience a new level of story telling. Discover a depth that broadens the scope of how one sees the world and oneself. It is liberating, fascinating, unique, honest and edgy. Her production includes a sparse, suggestive set, costumes, props and live music, making this a delectable feast for the eyes, the soul, and the imagination. It's a combination of Caribbean/British storytelling, performance art, stand-up comedy, live music from The Champagne Band, and pieces based on excerpts from previous shows and her books.

Mendel is a raconteur, a griot, an improvisational performance artist and a talented stage actor. She glides easily between characters, stories, and cultural sensibilities. She is skilled at talking about issues and concerns sometimes considered controversial. She normalizes healthy communications.
