Lavinia Marian Poe became the first black woman licensed to practice law in Virginia

The L. Marian Poe Meeting Room is named after this iconic woman who was the first Black woman to pass the Virginia bar exam and become a practicing lawyer. She practiced law right here in Newport News and we are proud to recognize her accomplishments in our facility.
